Veggie Tunnel Training - Gobabis Students

Micro-garden/Horticulture Training

Training Duration: 23rd of September 2013 to the 27th of September 2013
Venue: Hope Village
Trainer: Emmanuel Muyumba

Students Names:

·   SARA VITA
·   WILLIE THAU
·   RUDOLPH TOTWE
·   MARIA DAWID

4 persons were sent to Windhoek to receive training on micro-gardening, mainly on Veggie-tunnel production. Training was organized by Albie Oelofse and presented by Emmanuel Muyumba, a TOT Horticulturist.
This training was offered in order to prepare the students to install and manage veggie-tunnels as part of their skills, to create job opportunities and to teach their skills to members of their community.

Students were trained on how to:

·   Install a veggie-tunnel and repair it
·     Plant, care and harvest vegetables (how and when to water, how to harvest certain crops and when to harvest them)
·     Control of water (how to mix fertilizer and what quantities of water to apply)
·     Plant in bags
·     Select soil and how to prepare the soil for planting
·     Plan a planting calendar and do crop rotation (crop cycles with reference to the sterility of the sand)
·      Use Hydroponic Fertilizer
·      Choose a good crop cultivars
·       Address problems with crops and what to expect (Pest Control and diseases)

My class with the students was mainly practical work; we worked more outdoors than indoors. Students were enthusiastic in the learning process and showed an open heart for further learning.
Students were successful with the written test and the planting calendar, which was really great. Although there were some challenges with language, they helped one another with clarification.

The students came from the Gobabis community in the Omaheke Region.

Activities that students participated in were:

·   Watering
·   Weeding
·   Harvesting
·   Maintaining a clean environment around the garden
·   Setting up and down of the Veggie Tunnel

Evaluation

At the end of the training, students completed a written test that covered the topics of the week’s training. The four students made it with satisfactory results. This proved that the general understanding of the course was good, regarding a basic understanding of the information received. As a result of the test, the presenter was also able to identify areas which proved to be unclear to the participants and used the final session to address and explain these topics in more detail.
